The Google O'Reilly Open Source Awards are presented annually at OSCON to members of the open source community. They were first presented in 2005.
The awards have been received by women who have made significant contributions to opensource and are deserving of this recognition. However, the inclusion of exactly one woman each year for 3 years may be an example of Tokenism on behalf of the organisers.
Women who have won this award include:
- Penny Leach 2009, "Best Education Hacker", for her work on Moodle
- Angela Byron 2008 "Best Contributor", for her Drupal contributions
- Pamela Jones 2007 "Best FUD Fighter", for her blog Groklaw

Selection process[]
Nominations for 2009 were due mid-May, about two months before OSCON. Anyone may nominate someone for the award. The selection process beyond that is opaque.
