Cosplay (short for "costume play") is a geek activity where people dress up as (usually geeky) characters. This is usually done in the context of a Comics, Anime, or Science Fiction convention or similar event.

While people of all genders do cosplay, there is often considerable attention given to female cosplayers. For instance, photographers may focus on female cosplayers, female cosplayers may be seen as "asking for" Harassment or Sexual assault, or criticism may be aimed at women who cosplay but fail to meet sexist beauty standards (eg. fat cosplayers).

Crossplay

Cross-gender cosplay (aka "crossplay") may provide an opportunity to experiment with or challenge mainstream conceptions of gender. For example, "Female Doctor [Who]" cosplay is a common trope in this area, where a female cosplayer dresses as a feminine version of a Dr Who costume. For example, Female 6th Doctor, Femme doctors.

Cultural appropriation

Other issues

  • Female cosplayers may experience (implicit or explicit) pressure to dress in "sexy" costumes. Ideally, a woman's choice to dress sexily (or not) should not be too closely tied to the degree of approval or acceptance she gets for doing so.
  • Cosplayers are often the subject of Photography. Many photographers focus on female cosplayers, and galleries of "sexy cosplayers" are common. This diminishes and ignores the efforts of women who put great effort into their costumes but who do not meet certain beauty standards.
  • Speaking of beauty standards, cosplayers who aren't slim or mainstream-attractive may experience mockery or other harassment. (See also: Body image)
  • Cosplayers, especially those who dress sexily, may be especially targetted by harassers.
  • Cosplayers who are harassed or sexually assaulted may be blamed for it, or told they were "asking for it", "seeking attention", etc.
