Anime stands for animated works originating in Japan. It shares most of its conventions with manga.
Two major demographics of anime and manga in Japan are geared specifically at women: shojo (for young girls) and josei (for young adult women). Other major demographics include shonen (for young boys), seinen (for young men), and kodomo (for children). Less major demographic exist for a multitude of target groups, such as mature adult women and men, the elderly, and so on.
